The date seen on the earliest plaster in Plas Mawr is 1577 — more than ten years before the Bible was translated into Welsh. Two letters also appear repeatedly on the plaster — R.W. — the initials of Robert Wynn (d. 1598), the third son of the relatively wealthy family of Gwydir Castle in the Conwy Valley.

Until 1506, the Welsh did not have the right to own land in Conwy, the borough that had been established at the same time as the castle was built, following the invasion of Edward I in 1282-83. But Robert Wynn was an ambitious man who had made his mark in the service of one of the prominent English nobles and, in 1570, he bought a substantial house and three orchards in the middle of the town.

In 1576, he managed to buy another piece of land just north, giving him the chance to build Plas Mawr. He started on the northern side, adding to the existing house. That is the part where the plasterwork dated 1577 is located. By 1580, the old house was demolished and the rest of Plas Mawr completed, with access off Jugler's Lane (Crown Lane today). One further piece was added in 1585 after Robert Wynn bought another small piece of land between the house and the High Street.
